Every hero in Dota 2 has its own hero level, from 1 to 30, and the level decides which badge the hero wears, from Bronze to Grandmaster. A Dota 2 hero level is a progress track that pays Shards and voice lines, and it is separate from your rank medal. This guide explains how the levels and XP work, what is free, which rewards are worth chasing, and how to level a hero faster yourself.
What a Dota 2 Hero Level Is (and Is Not)
Hero levels are part of Dota Plus, Valve's monthly subscription. Every game you play with a hero earns XP (experience points) for that hero, and leveling up pays Shards, the Dota Plus currency. You will also see this system called hero progression or hero mastery.
Two other things use the same words, so keep them apart. The level your hero reaches inside a match also stops at 30, but it starts again at 1 in every game. And your rank medal, Herald to Immortal, shows your MMR, not your hero progress; our guide to Dota 2 ranks and MMR covers that. This article is about the hero level and badge that stay with each hero from match to match.
Dota 2 Hero Levels: Bronze to Grandmaster
There are 30 hero levels in six tiers, and each tier has its own badge. A Dota 2 Grandmaster hero is a hero at level 30. The numbers in this table come from the August 2026 version of Liquipedia's Dota Plus page.
| Badge | Levels | XP needed per level | Total XP at the end of the tier | Shards per level |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bronze | 1-5 | 50, 300, 400, 500, 600 | 1,850 | 1,300 (levels 2-5) |
| Silver | 6-11 | 900 rising to 1,400 | 8,750 | 2,400 |
| Gold | 12-17 | 1,700 rising to 2,200 | 20,450 | 3,200 |
| Platinum | 18-24 | 2,500 rising to 3,100 | 40,050 | 4,000 |
| Master | 25-29 | 6,800 at level 25, then 4,000 to 4,600 | 64,050 | 9,700 at level 25, then 4,800 |
| Grandmaster | 30 | 8,000 | 72,050 | 10,000 |
Each tier also adds hero voice lines for the chat wheel, the in-game menu of phrases your hero can say: two lines each at levels 1, 6 and 12, and one each at levels 18, 25 and 30. Level 25 adds a map ping effect as well.
Two rules matter most: every player can level a hero to 5 for free, and only Dota Plus subscribers can go further, up to Grandmaster at level 30. Valve doesn't publish the per-level XP and Shard numbers, so compare a few with your own client.
Two levels cost far more than their neighbors. Level 25 asks for 6,800 XP and level 30 for 8,000, while the levels around them ask for 3,100 to 4,600. Levels 25 to 30 hold about 44% of the whole climb, and hero level 30 needs 72,050 XP in total.
Dota Plus Hero Levels: How XP Works and What Is Free
These are the rules as of patch 7.41f (September 2026). None of Valve's gameplay patch notes from 7.33 to 7.41f mention the hero level system, and the Summer Scrub of July 30, 2026 rebalanced many relics and challenges but lists no change to levels or tiers. Hero XP comes from three places:
- Playing a match. Every match earns XP for the hero you played. Liquipedia lists 50 XP for finishing a match and 50 more for winning it, so a win is worth 100 XP and a loss 50.
- Hero challenges. Each hero has its own challenges, and three are active at a time. Each has three difficulty tiers worth 250, 375 or 500 XP, and the XP only counts if you win the match. Challenges can be refreshed once every two weeks.
- Relics. Relics are counters that track a hero's stats, and each one levels up as you play. A relic level-up gives bonus hero XP: 5 for a common relic and 30 for a rare one.
The mode matters. Turbo, the faster mode, pays half the hero XP and caps challenges at two stars. Ability Draft, where players draft abilities, gives no hero XP and no challenge credit.
What is free? All players can earn up to hero level 5, and only Dota Plus can level a hero further. That whole Bronze tier is 1,850 XP, about 19 wins of base XP. Past level 5 you need a Dota Plus subscription, which is paid monthly; the client shows the price for your region.
Hero Level Rewards: Which Ones Are Worth Chasing
The rewards are Shards, badges, hero voice lines and one ping effect, and nothing on Liquipedia's list changes how a hero plays. So pick by what you will enjoy. Here's our view, tier by tier.
- Bronze, levels 1 to 5: free for everyone, 1,850 XP in total, and 5,200 Shards listed across levels 2 to 5. Worth it on every hero you play, because it happens by itself.
- Silver to Platinum, levels 6 to 24: the Shard payout rises from 2,400 to 4,000 per level, and you unlock five more voice lines. Worth it on the two or three heroes you play most, if you have Dota Plus anyway.
- Master, level 25: 9,700 Shards at once, a voice line and a ping effect, but that one level asks for 6,800 XP.
- Grandmaster, level 30: 10,000 Shards and the last voice line. Liquipedia's Shards page lists Shard rewards for a Grandmaster hero's challenges, so a hero you play most keeps earning. It needs 72,050 XP in total, so pick a hero you want to play for hundreds of games.
Shards add up: the table gives about 105,700 for one hero from level 1 to 30 (our sum). For scale, Liquipedia's Shards page lists relics at 1,600 (common) and 8,000 (rare), older items at 2,000 to 15,000, and exclusive items at 75,000 to 150,000. Prices change, so check the Shard Shop before you plan around them. We'd treat hero levels as a bonus on top of the other Dota Plus tools, not as a reason to subscribe on their own.
How to Level Up Heroes Fast in Dota 2
Hero XP is simple, so the fast route is simple too. Every tip below follows from the XP rules above.
- Stay on one hero. XP goes only to the hero you played, so five heroes get you five slow climbs. Pick one you enjoy.
- Play to win. A win pays double the base XP of a loss, and challenge XP only counts in a win. A hero you know well beats a hero with an easy challenge that you play badly.
- Check your challenges before you queue. Three are active at a time. Choose a plan that fits how you would play the hero anyway, and remember they refresh once every two weeks.
- Skip Ability Draft, and do not count on Turbo. Ability Draft gives no hero XP. Turbo is faster, but it pays half the XP and caps challenge stars at two, so do not assume faster games mean faster levels.
- Play toward your relics. Each relic level-up gives bonus XP, and a breakdown of relic progress shows after each game. Look at them before you queue and aim for them when it costs you nothing.
- Do not tilt. Tilt means playing worse because you are angry. A tilted game is a lost game, and a loss pays half the XP. Our behavior score guide covers keeping your matches healthy.
How long does it take? On base XP alone a win is 100, so level 30 equals about 720 wins. At a 50% win rate you average 75 XP per game, which is roughly 960 games. A three-star challenge pays 500 XP, the same as five wins, so finishing challenges when they fit is the biggest speed-up you control. These are our sums from Liquipedia's numbers, not Valve figures.
Getting Help With Hero Levels
If you do not have time for the grind, our Dota 2 hero level service takes a hero you choose from its current level to a target level between 1 and 30. You pick the hero and the level range on the order page, and you can chat with your booster and our team there. Your booster gets access through an encrypted Steam login box that only they (and our admins, if needed) can open, and it is deleted when the order is done. Checkout works with PayPal, card, Apple Pay or Google Pay.
One thing before you order: levels above 5 need Dota Plus, so ask support how that is handled on your order. If you would rather play the games yourself, one-to-one coaching is available on your own account, with live in-game sessions and replay review, including advice on the heroes you play most.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many hero levels are there in Dota 2?
There are 30, in six badge tiers: Bronze (levels 1 to 5), Silver (6 to 11), Gold (12 to 17), Platinum (18 to 24), Master (25 to 29) and Grandmaster (level 30). Level 30 is the cap.
Do you need Dota Plus to level up heroes in Dota 2?
Only past level 5. All players can earn up to hero level 5, and only Dota Plus can level a hero further. Liquipedia's August 2026 Dota Plus page lists this rule. Dota Plus is a paid monthly subscription.
How much XP do you need for hero level 30 in Dota 2?
Liquipedia lists 72,050 XP in total, including 8,000 for the last level. Valve has not printed that table in the posts we checked, so confirm a few levels in your client. On base XP alone that is about 720 wins, and challenges and relics shorten the trip.
Can other players see my hero level in Dota 2?
Your badge shows in the game. Liquipedia lists it over your hero at the start of a match, next to your hero's name in chat, and above the hero portrait on the in-game screen, and teammates see it when you ping. Liquipedia does not say whether the enemy team can see it, so do not assume it is hidden from them.
How do you level up heroes fast in Dota 2?
Stay on one hero, play to win, take challenges you can finish inside a win, skip Ability Draft, and keep Dota Plus active past level 5. The tips section above has the details.
Can I pay someone to level my hero in Dota 2?
Yes. Our hero level service takes a hero you choose from its current level to the level you want, between 1 and 30. You pick the hero and the level range on the order page, and you can chat with your booster and our team there.
Bottom Line
A Dota 2 hero level is a 30-step track with six badges. The first five levels are free, Dota Plus unlocks the rest, and wins and challenges are the main sources of XP. Chase Bronze on every hero, go further on the heroes you actually play, and take Master or Grandmaster only for a hero you love. If time is the problem, our hero level service is there.
